Bio:
In 1900, John is 13 years old and living on the family-owned farm in Long Point, IL. He is the third youngest of four and attends school with his sisters Emma and Nellie. Brother Allen is 20 and is a laborer on the family farm. John’s paternal aunt Lydia, aged 55, also lives in the home. Every other adult male on the census is a farm worker, including a few English and German immigrants. By 1910, John and his new spouse are living at home with mom, dad, and little sister Nellie. The next house on the census belongs to John’s brother Allen, where he lives with his wife and John’s little nieces and nephews Howard and Florence. They are all farmers.
By 1920, John has a house and rented farm in Long Point that he shares with his family. Along with 3 kids under the age of 10, John’s widowed mother Phoebe and an 18-year-old home servant named Elma Defenbaugh also live there. All on the census are grain farmers other than the Park family, who seem to be livestock farmers. Elma is probably not their house servant but employed by another family. Brother Allen and family still live next to them. By 1930, not much has changed.
By 1940, John has moved his wife and youngest son to Bruce, LaSalle County, IL. They no longer live in a rural area. John makes $480 as manager at a farm and hatchery while son Lyle makes $500 as a truck driver for a laundry. These salaries are in the middle range for this census. Some of their neighbors are farm laborers and some work in industry such as brick layers, teletype operators, and garage mechanics. John passed away in Streator, IL in 1943.
